Where The Mind Is Without Fear by Rabindranath Tagore

Where The Mind Is Without Fear- by Rabindranath Tagore

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

The India of Tagore’s dream is a
country where her people hold their heads
high with their pride in knowledge and
strength born of that knowledge. Where all
countrymen must come out the aged-old
world of people who have lost the vision of
one humanity by the narrow loyalties of
caste creed and religion. Prejudice and
superstitious which narrow the mind and
divide people would be a thing of the past.

The poem is patriotic in nature considering the independence and the happiness of the countrymen as the most important factor. If a country lacks such requirements, the countrymen can never be at peace. Consequently, the society will be full of disharmony and social unjust. The poem sends a message that the society should be free from all social evils, only then it can lead to progress. Therefore, Tagore prays to God to create such an ideal society for his motherland. Make sure you go though the critical analysis of Where the Mind is Without Fear.

In the final line of the poem, Tagore asks the ‘Father’, presumably God to awaken his country into such a heaven of freedom.

The poet speaks of a perfect world without fear, inequality, segregation or lethargy. He dreams of a utopia where knowledge is available to all without restrictions, where lies do not exist, where everyone works hard to achieve perfection and where the long, slow passage of time does not disillusion the resolve of the people. He prays that his country becomes such a utopia, free from oppression and terror with peace and harmony.

The poem is a very inspirational statement that shows us how a perfect world looks like. Such a world might not exist in reality but the poet urges the people to work tirelessly and think creatively to get as close to this world as possible. I think the poet has been very imaginative to describe such a world so specifically. It is a world where there can be no wrong and only the positive aspects of life exist. It is the ideal world that all of us long for, a world without any anxiety or stress but only with progress and unity. The poet has left us an ideal to aim for and I believe we should strive to achieve it.

The poem is a charming lyrics , a patriotic song and noble dream. The opening line hints at the theme. Its rouse curosity of the reader to know about that heaven on the earth where mind is without fear.Does that ideal state of civilization exist anywhere? That is not the question, because the poet has ideal dream for his country. He prays for its realization. He wishes his country man to be free from outmoded customs and superstitious beliefs. True freedom according to the poet, lies in freedom from narrows considerations of caste, color and creed.

Cynics may find the poem unrealistic and unworkable. We can't expect the world to be full of virtuous people who always speak the truth and lead an honest life. But an ideal has always to be high enough to exceed the grasp of its pursuer. Here in lies the beauty of the poem which makes instant appeal.Poetic devices of simile and metaphor have been used.Abstract thoughts have been clothed in pictorial imagery.

The poem below is a masterpiece - it beautifully captures foundational principles that any nation should adopt - or a concise description of what the constitution of any country should look like. It was written by Nobel prize winner Rabindranath Tagore, before India's independence. A must-read for any senator, politician, public servant, or any dutiful citizen.

The poem describes Tagore's vision of how his country could offer a heavenly experience to it's citizens, or what a free country should look like. In his view, it would be a country where,

    * people can express their views freely without fear of repercussions,
    * people share and spread knowledge freely,
    * people are open minded and willing to listen to each other's perspectives,
    * people are true to each other, value their integrity, and honest in their dealings,
    * people work hard and strive for perfection in quality,
    * people are driven by reasoning and scientific temper, instead of fallacies, hypocricies, or ideologies.
    * people are open to change and don't succumb to inertia or continue age-old orthodox customs and practices that do not meaningfully apply anymore,
    * people are progressive, think of bigger goals and accomplish them, constantly raising the bar.

When such a vision is accomplished, such a country would be free, and a heaven to live in.

Easily said, than done? Not quite, there are countries that have woken up to much of Tagore's vision. Ironically, India hasn't woken up yet, but not in deep slumber either - let's hope the dawn is soon.

People would work for perfections in the clear light of reason leaving aside all superstitious rituals.

Where everyone is free to toil and work hard for anything they desire either for their own or for the good of the nation. Everyone is encouraged to strive tirelessly till they attain full satisfaction in reaching their goals and perfection. Where blind superstitious habits of thought and action have not put out the light of reason. Where people’s mind should not dwell in the mistakes of the past nor be possessed by it. On the other hand they should be led by the power of reasoning to be focused on the future by applying scientific thought and action. Tagore’s only prayer to the Supreme Ultimate is leading the nation to such an ideal state of heaven. It is only by the universality of outlook and an abiding passion for the realization of great human ideals that India will achieve her true freedom. This way alone she will realize her destiny.

The first line of the poem is one of the most important sub clauses which go to build up the poem. The ‘World of Freedom’, which Tagore envisions for his countrymen, can only be attained if we possess a fearless mind. Only a fearless mind can hold its head upright. So attain true freedom one has to have a mind which is ‘Without fear’. Thus, the poet wishes to be awakened to a paradise where the mind can work fearlessly and the spirit can hold its head high and again its knowledge is crystal clear reasoning:

A free country means where one can acquire knowledge in all freedom of choice. The big world of man is fragmented or restricted to small mutually exclusive compartments. The poet says that our minds, instead of being engulfed in such prejudices and narrow superstitions, must be enriched by thoughts and actions, which are worthy and beneficial for the sake of our country:

According to Tagore, attainment of ideal freedom was definitely an arduous but the most dreamy of situation in our country, in the pre−independent India. Studies commissioned by Tagore did determine with near certainty that declining moral values reflect cultural bias in our country, in the sense that post independent India scores such bloodshed in the name of religion. Here, Tagore remains an accurate predictor of Indian sociology. One must possess a fearless mind with one’s head hold high in self-esteem. Knowledge gained by the countrymen must be free from prejudices. The world should not become fragmented through internal strives and feuds. The mental make-up should be free from the superstitious, narrow and gloomy practices. The poet, finally, conceives of a situation, where the mind is guided by the divine one to awaken ourselves from the errors of our commitments.

Where the mind is withour fear is a beautiful poem written by Rabindra nath Tagore where he shows his love of nature nad homeland. Here Tagore defines freedom as fundamental system of reasoning of a soverign state of mind, accepted as a guide for governing the man in a nutshell. Freedom fixes a limit and defines the relation of their moral, ethical, and powers of thestate of mind, thus setting up thebasis for life.

The poem was written at the time when India was under the British rule and people were eagerly waiting to get the freedom from the British. This poem has given a lot ofstrength to the people who were struggling for the independence. It is a prayer tothe almighty for a hasslefree nation free from any kind of manipulative and corruptive powers.

In this poem the poet wishes for a world which is not fragmented by prejudices based on caste, creed, color, religion or any other baseless superstition.

The poem is a patriotic poem considering the freedom and eternal happiness of life of the people as the most important factor. If people are deprived of such basic requirements, then there remains no place to feel the life. As a result, the society is full of social unjust and discrimination. Thus the poem asserts the fact that society must be free from all such social evils. For this, the speaker requests the god to create a very ideal and heavenly society.

The poem with a nationalistic feeling is successful to impress the reader. So far his point in the poem is concerned; we may not easily accept him. The country naturally consists of people of various castes and creeds, and in such situation, there arises various thoughts and ideas. So it is useless to talk about one nation. Similarly the poet seems too much spiritual and to be believing on the mercy of god. It, in no way, is acceptable in case of ruling the country as well as imposing the rule over the people. On the other hand, he pleads the divine power but up to now no man is blessed by him.

'Where the mind is without fear' is the 35th no. in Tagore's English 'Gitanjali'. 'Gitanjali' means 'song-offerings', and this is one such song--a prayer to God, the Father.

The poem was written when India was under British colonial rule, struggling for freedom. But for Tagore, freedom was more than merely political; it was to be truly spiritual. The present poem reads like a prayer for that spiritual freedom.

True freedom means liberation from the shackles of fear. The head 'held high' is a manifest posture of that liberated mind.

The whole world of man must be re-integrated; narrow, parochial walls fragmenting the world are to be demolished for achieving this holistic oneness.

Words must issue forth from 'the depth of truth'; that is to say, language shall have to be liberated from the half-truths and lies of expediency.

Untiring efforts should be directed towards the goal of perfection.

Reason is like a 'clear stream', the transparency of which should not have been swallowed up by outdated and irrelevant customs--'the dreary desert sand of dead habit'.

True freedom lies in the mind which is always led forward by the universal mind of the Father into 'ever-widening thought and action'.

Tagore prays for 'that heaven of freedom', seeks the grace of the Father, to be awakened to a new spiritual consciousness.

The poem combines patriotic zeal with fervent spiritual longing. The urge for political freedom is enhanced and transformed into a moral-intellectual freedom of the mind. The poem is also remarkable for its simplicity of diction and images.

The poem "Where the Mind Is without Fear" is a pleading poem in which the speaker is requesting the god almighty to guide his people and his country to the world of eternity where everything is free to everyone. The speaker wishes every freedom to his people and to the whole humanity. He wants to take his people to such land where people don't need to have any fear, where education to every people is free, where people live happily together without being divided in to groups, where the people always head to the perfection. To get such Promised Land, the speaker pleads the god.

The poem is a patriotic poem considering the freedom and eternal happiness of life of the people as the most important factor. As I read the poem, it has brought me back to the condition of Nepalese people under the rule of Ranas. During this period, Nepalese people couldn't get chance to read and write. Education had been too precious and expensive to them. People were too much suppressed by the rule that they were under the great fear of the Rana rule. They could do nothing except pleading the god for their freedom from such rule.

The poem is written by Rabindranath Tagore, poet, philosopher and Nobel laureate born in Calcutta. This poem is written in the era when India was under the British Rule and people were just waiting to get liberated from the British rule. The poem gave a lot of strength to people who were fighting for India's Independence.

If people in nation have bad habits then for sure it will affect directly to nation. Bad habits resist mind to work in a good manner and if this mind is spoiled with bad habits then no man can work better. Thus, this will affect nation’s progress in various fields like technology or other. Therefore poet prays God to give people to his country who are without any bad habit.

Rabindranath Tagore was a great Indian poet who wrote on several niches. He was great in using words properly. He gave each line in his poem an immense meaning by incorporating proper words into it. “Where the Mind is Without Fear” is one example of his work.

This poem explains the dream of poet for his nation. In this poem poet wishes for his nation. He wrote all his ideas for nation. He explained how his nation should be through this poem.

Poet articulates his love and thoughts his nation in this poem. He requests God to make his nation ideal. He has lots of desires for his nation in his head. He wishes that the people must not have any type of terror.

The people must live their life by way of self-respect. He requests that everyone should obtain a free knowledge and the people should live mutually with union. The mind of all people should be honest, truthful and they must continuously struggle for excellence. The people must not turn out to be slave of bad habits that can affect their life as well as nation’s life. The people must have clearness of feelings. He also states that this world should not break up into pieces by thin conjugal walls. By this way poet urges for liberty for his nation. By this way poet also illustrates his imaginings of idyllic India.

Every person feels for their nation. In the same manner poet also feels for his nation. Poet not only prays for his own country but also for the whole world. He says that this world is broken into number of pieces depending on caste, clothes, languages and skin colors.

According to poet this can cause to great dispute among different countries and in other ways it will affect mother earth. Thus writer cleverly says that this world should not have any walls created between two countries. This world should not be split into fragments.

I absolutely adore this ((broken fragments, narrow domestic walls - the depth of truth, stretches towards perfection...Loving it..))))
Its the real time we woke up to understand the intrinsic meaning and values of each and every expression of this sonnet to make this world a happy place to live, devoid of the narrow feelings we have developed towards one another as individuals, residing in the same colony, same town, same state, same country and last but not the least, on the same planet! Great souls like Tagore do not descend on this planet often to remind us about these values !!!!!

    Where knowledge is free;”

A free country means where one can acquire knowledge in all freedom of choice. The big world of man is fragmented or restricted to small mutually exclusive compartments. The poet preaches that our minds, instead of being engulfed in such prejudices and narrow superstitions, must be enriched by thoughts and actions, which are worthy and beneficial for the sake of the country:

“Where the world has not been
broken up into fragments by narrow
    domestic walls;
    Where words come out from
    the depth of truth;”

In an ideal free country everybody speaks his/her heart clear, where actions flow in the form of various streams moving from success to success, where petty conventions do not stagnant the course of judgment. Tagore entertains a system of thought that emphasizes the role of reason in obtaining knowledge. He also emphasizes the role of experience, especially sense perception. Tagore also attempts to tie various perceptions of the world together in some way. The comparative study of variegated knowledge would led to the reconstruction of a hypothetical parent Ideal to account for striking similarities among the various perceptions of East and west:

    “Where tireless striving stretches its
    arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason
has not lost its way into the dreary
    desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by
    thee into ever-widening thought and
    action…”

According to RabindranathTagore, attainment of ideal freedom was definitely an arduous but the most dreamy of situation in our country, in the pre−independent India. Studies commissioned by Tagore did determine with near certainty that declining moral values reflect cultural bias in the country, in the sense that post independent India scores such bloodshed in the name of religion. Here, Tagore remains an accurate predictor of Indian sociology. One must possess a fearless mind with one’s head hold high in self-esteem. Knowledge gained by the countrymen ought to be free from prejudices. The world should not become fragmented through internal strives and feuds. The mental make-up should be free from the superstitious, narrow and gloomy practices. The poet, finally, conceives of a situation, where the mind is guided by the Divine One to awaken ourselves from the errors of our commitments.

Tagore, in his poem "Where The Mind Is Without Fear" wishes for a world which is not fragmented by prejudices based on caste, creed, color, religion or other baseless superstitions. Prejudices and superstitions should not divide the people in groups and break their unity . He wants a nation where people are truthful, not superficial and words should come out from the depth of their hearts. "Where The Mind Is Without Fear" talks about the poet yearning for a country where people would strive without getting tired to reach perfection leaving behind prejudices and old traditions. Tagore wants the power of reason to dominate the minds of his countrymen, he does not want the stream of reason to be lost amongst outdated customs and traditions and only that can direct the mind towards selfless thoughts and everlasting action.
